For Georgia criminal-history information, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation directs people to Georgia criminal-history record access and explains what the state record contains. If the background check is being purchased from a consumer-reporting company for employment, federal FCRA procedures are a separate issue from the Georgia record itself.
| Task | Official source | What it covers | Boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online Georgia felony-conviction search | Georgia Felon Search | Public Georgia felony-conviction information without the person’s consent | Does not return misdemeanor, juvenile felony, sealed or expunged records |
| Georgia criminal history | Local sheriff or police department, following GBI guidance | Georgia identification, arrest, disposition and custodial data in the state record | Broader history of another person requires signed consent; ask local law enforcement for its request form, identity requirements and fee |
| Your Georgia record | GBI/local sheriff or police route | Copy/review of Georgia history | Follow agency identity requirements |
| Employment consumer report | FTC FCRA guidance | Rights and employer procedures when a reporting company is used | Not a Georgia repository search |
Use Georgia’s criminal-history authority when the task is the state record.
Use Georgia Felon Search for the limited online felony-conviction lookup. Have first and last name, date of birth, sex and a valid credit card ready; GBI’s public-felony request guidance also lists race. Review possible matches carefully: this is a name-based search, and fingerprints are needed to confirm an exact identity match. The charge is $15 for each search, including a no-record result; when several possibilities are returned, each record selected for access carries a $15 charge.
For a broader Georgia history of another person, obtain that person’s signed consent on the prescribed form and contact local law enforcement. GBI lists the subject’s full name, address, Social Security number and birth date for that consent form. Ask the receiving agency how to supply it securely and what its current fee is.
If an employer buys a background report, review the FCRA process separately.
Do not treat a same-name result as enough proof for a consequential decision.
Personal review, record research, or employment screening.
Use name/DOB or fingerprint requirements from the official route.
Confirm the event is within Georgia scope.
For employment consumer reports, preserve the separate FCRA workflow.
GBI states that Georgia criminal-history records can include identification data, arrest data, final judicial disposition data submitted by justice agencies, and custodial information where applicable.
Employment background-report rules do not convert the FTC into a Georgia record custodian; the FTC source only supports the consumer-report process.
